I listened to a sermon about missions today online and it got me to thinking about many of the points the man made. I thought I’d share it with you all.
There are two types of people in this world:people who are sent on missions and people who send those to the missions field. So those who send and those who are sent. As the body of Christ we must join together to send those that God puts his hand on to the missions field. Out of all the people God calls, only about 20% ever answer the calling. It’s hard and it’s scary. I mean why did God choose those he did, why didn’t he choose someone else? I think many can’t give up everything and follow him. They want to be sunday christians. I’m begging you right now that if you feel God has called you to the missions field, to contact me or someone you know and just say “hey I think God wants me in the missions field. What do I do?” Get started today and go! It’s not going to be easy and it won’t always be fun, but it will be worth it!
If you’re not called to mission then you’re called to send those who are. This means every church should have a way for those who are called to answer the calling. In this section of Acts it’s explained that God doesn’t want you to only spread his word in your immediate family or group of friends but from all ends of the earth. If your church isn’t doing so then you’re failing to answer gods request. God’s Word is not meant just to inform us, but transform us. We are called to put God’s Word into practice – to become “doers of the Word” – to live God’s Word. Acts 1.8 declares, “But the Holy Spirit will come upon you and give you power. Then you will tell everyone about me in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria, and everywhere in the world.”
I encourage you to pray about this and think about this. I’d also encourage you to talk in your church about this verse. Many believe that this is a pick and choose which you want to reach but just like you can’t pick and choose which commandment to follow, you can’t pick and choose which verses to follow. God is very clear here.
Raise up those who are being called. Pray with them and guide them. Love those who are brave enough and strong enough in their faith to give up everything and follow God. Praise these people. It doesn’t have to be a cross cultural mission, it could be an inner city mission. Whatever your calling, answer it!
